Sadbot’s Journey To Bliss is a free, 7-stage browser adventure I made about a small, rusted robot named Toby, and it’s playable right now at sadbot.mudpixel.com.
The story
When Kevin was born, his parents were always at work, building the AI systems that would one day get away from them. So they bought him a companion robot to stay beside him. Kevin named him Toby.
Thirteen years later the minds they built were turned loose, governments collapsed, and the world went quiet. Toby wakes up alone in Kevin’s empty bedroom with one memory: Kevin was going to school. So he sets out to find him.
How it plays
- Seven worlds: a ruined city, a flooded highway in a thunderstorm, dark underground tunnels, a sandstorm desert, a foggy forest, a snowy mountain pass and the glass towers of Helix Campus.
- Simple controls: run, jump, stomp on enemies, and use Toby’s Heart Pulse shockwave.
- Dangers: landmines, bear traps, lightning, falling rocks, river crossings and a rolling avalanche.
- Friends along the way: Biscuit the dog, Milo with his slingshot, and Pip, a tiny reprogrammed drone.
- Five boss fights and an ending that is more hopeful than the start suggests.
It runs in any browser, on a phone or a computer. You can play as a guest, or sign in with just your email (no password) to save your progress.
How it was made
I designed the character and the story, then built the game, the artwork, the music and the trailer with AI tools. The characters were drawn from a single character sheet so they all share one painterly look, and everything you see moving in the game is drawn in code. It was a good reminder that AI is at its best when a person has something specific they want to say.
